Ardrossan Academicals RFC was saddened to learn of the very sudden death on Sunday 23rd November of one of its former members, Frank Hannan who was aged 73 years.
Many will remember Frank with great fondness as a very personable and likeable Irishman (born in Limerick) who refereed out of Memorial Field for several years in the 70s, throughout the 80s and into the early 90s. In addition to being regarded widely as “a players’ referee” - in that he understood The Game, could quieten any trouble with a quiet word and wry smile, and allowed matches to flow - Frank was also a talented and very humorous after-dinner speaker who was in great demand at club dinners.
In recent years, he had resumed the strong links that he once enjoyed within rugby in the Glasgow District by becoming a regular attendee at the GROGS monthly lunches at Braidholm and was present at last week’s lunch. A very sociable individual, Frank Hannan was always great company and will be sadly missed.
Frank Hannan was also a keen golfer and is a former Captain of Ravenspark Golf Club.
Prior to his retirement almost 10 years ago, Frank worked with the NHS as Catering Manager at Crosshouse Hospital and, in recent years, he lived in Irvine where he died. He is survived by his son, Graham, and his daughter, Carol, to whom Ardrossan Accies send their deepest condolences. Frank’s wife died in 1995.
Details of his funeral service is yet to be confirmed.

On a typical cold Saturday afternoon, the Ardrossan Rugby lads managed to heat things up for the locals with passers-by swerving off the road for a bargain £3 car wash.
